Lyman E. Burleson Jr.

Lyman E. Burleson Jr. of Johnson City, Tenn., died peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, while receiving excellent, loving care from doctors and nurses at Veteran’s Mountain Home.
Lyman was born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., on November 2, 1924, to the late Lyman E. and Sybil Hinkle Burleson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; son, David; and step-sister, Georgia.
Lyman graduated from Science Hill High School, in 1941, as a member of the National Honor Society and R.O.T.C. Officer.
In 1944, he began his career as a trainee in Officers School in Camp Lee, Va. He graduated as 1st Lt. 545th Quartermaster Depot.
Lyman received education and degrees from various universities: Stanford, Kentucky Christian, Milligan, ETSU, University of West Florida and Emmanuel. He was ordained as a Christian minister by Dr. L. Palmer Young, and he served various Christian churches.
In his later years, he taught at several local high schools, as well as, Montreat-Anderson College, N.C., and Billy Graham School of Missions and Evangelism.
Lyman dealt with a handicap resulting from an encounter in Okinawa during WWII, but he enjoyed a full life…without complaints.
He is survived by his brother, Robert A., and his sons, Joe and Stephen of Roan Mountain, and Robie of Portland, Ore.; also, many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He really loved his kinfolk and cherished their visits!
The family would like to express its appreciation to the many dedicated doctors, nurses, and health caregivers, especially Wilson, Jeff and members of West Side Christian Church in Elizabethton, where Lyman was a longtime member.
A celebration of Lyman’s life will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at West Side Christian Church, 1307 West G. Street, Elizabethton, Tenn. Doctors Greg Key, Gerald Holly and Edward Fine will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. at the church. There will be a private family interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, family and friends may make contributions to their own churches or favorite charities. Online condolences may be sent to the family of Lyman E.
