Norma Grace Gourley Surles joined her beloved husband John Henry Surles in Heaven on March 1, 2013. They were married for 42 years.
Norma was born in Roan Mountain on May 27, 1943 to Loy and Burns Gourley. She was the youngest of seven children. She will be sorely missed by her brother Joe Gourley and her lifelong friend and sister, Louise Gourley Boone. Norma had four children: Dean Mackie (Penny Mackie) and Johnie Surles Grindstaff (Eric Grindstaff). She had six grandchildren: Deanna “Betsy” Mackie Smith, Ericka Grindstaff Gamble (Rony Gamble), Amber Grindstaff, Nathaniel Grindstaff and Jonathon Grindstaff. She also had five great grandchildren: Kate-Lynn Smith, Colton Mackie, Roman Gamble, Logan Gamble and Veronica Gamble, due April 28.
Norma enjoyed many activities such as playing cards, fishing, shopping and volunteering her time at ARM in Elizabethton. She and John were also active church members of Heartland Fellowship where her homecoming service will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2013. Receiving friends will begin at 6 p.m. and the service will begin at 7 p.m. The family has requested all who attend to please dress in bright spring colors to honor Norma and come ready to celebrate her life.
Also, the family would like to thank Gerald and Sue Oliver, Pastor Marvin, Sara Slagle and Rachel Slagle Pearson, Lori Mackie, Harry and Linda Powell, Tanya Hudson, Amy Sands, Connie Royer, Dr. Walter Udoeyop, Dr. Charles Famoyin and Nurse Manager Leonard Cortese and all the staff on 4500 at Johnson City Medical Center.
The Cremation Society of Northeast Tennessee is serving the family.
