Oliver “Gord” Potter, 73, of Roan Mountain, passed away Friday, December 28, 2012, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, N.C., following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Murphy Potter and Delia Brewer Potter. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Odom of Roan Mountain and Joyce Odom of Butler; two nieces, Sharon “Susie” Odom of Elizabethton and Brenda Hughes of Roan Mountain; and and two nephews, Terry Odom of Roan Mountain and David Hughes of Roan Mountain.
Gord loved to grow blueberries and tend his honey bees.
Survivors include three sisters, Kathy Hamby and husband Frank, Wilma Chapel and Ruby Matheson, and two brothers, Ronald Potter and wife Debbie and Henry Potter and wife Karla, all of Roan Mountain. Also surviving are special friends, L.D. Jones and A.J. Borders, both of Roan Mountain. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Oliver will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, December 31, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Jim Storie officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, prior to the funeral service. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 1, in the Markland Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
