Percy Vance “June” Henson Jr., 76, of Butler, formerly of the Dry Hill community, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, April 11, 2013, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Percy Vance and Pearlie Ellen Mann Henson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Della Marie Hartley Henson, on March 28, 1994; four sisters, Margie Hartley, Lexie Harmon, Beatrice Henson and Muriel Henson; and a brother, Claude Henson.
Mr. Henson worked in manufacturing at North American Rayon Corporation, where he retired after 29 years of service. He was a veteran of the Air Force and a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon for many years.
Survivors include two sisters, Frances VanLandingham, Poga Community, and Texie Washburn and husband Gordon, Bristol, Conn.; a brother, John Henson and wife Kathy, Hampton; one aunt, Della Ward, Roan Mountain; and his former wife, Cleo Guy Henson, Butler, Tenn. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive, who will miss their “Uncle June.”
The funeral service for Mr. Henson will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Flat Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Greene and Rev. Bryan Miller officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Music will be under the direction of Turkey Tracks Trio (Jennifer Gillenwater, Mary Mays, Linda Miller), Roger Norris and Jody Howald, and Regina Cable, pianist. The graveside service will follow in the Flat Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Michael Gillenwater, Earl Walsh, Terry Henson, Dennis Guy, Richard Coffey and Randall Coffey. Honorary pallbearers will be Wendell Phillips, Jerry Hicks, Johnny Henson, Randall Guy and Basil Hartley. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center and Sycamore Shoals Hospital for all the love and care shown to Mr. Henson during his illness. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Flat Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
