Roosevelt Carden


Roosevelt Carden, 80, of Hampton, Tenn., passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Hillview Health Center following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Laney James and Alice Teague Carden.
Mr. Carden retired from American Air Filters. He was a member and deacon of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church.
Mr. Carden was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters and a special nephew, Marvin Carden.
Survivors include his wife of 58-1/2 years, Ruth Ward Carden, of the home; two daughters, Pam Smith and husband Todd and Jessica Carden and Michael Greenwell, all of Hampton, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Amber Smith and Travis, Butler, Tenn., Megan Smith and Johnathan Roosevelt Greenwell, both of Hampton, Tenn., and Isaiah Greenwell, Elizabethton, Tenn.; a great-grandson, Eli Richard Smith, Butler, Tenn.; and three sisters, Sherry Carden and Lula Belle Fair, both of Hampton, Tenn., and Susie Combs and husband Bo, Elizabethton, Tenn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Carden will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Danny Osborne officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the funeral service, or at the residence at anytime. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Holden, Ray Deloach, Herman Deloach and friends at Lon and Teresa’s Grill. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at noon Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hillview Health Center and to the doctors and nurses at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center for all the love and care shown to Mr. Carden during his illness.
