Ruby Simerly Harmon, 88, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Nancy Arrowood Simerly.
Ruby was involved in several local businesses during the years. She was a member of the Sycamore Chapter #163, Order of Eastern Star, The Gold Star Wives and a member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary. She was Foster Mother of the Year, having fostered more than 34 daughters.
Ruby was a member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Harmon, in 1976; a grandson, Craig Lanthorn, in 1994; brothers, Howard Simerly, Rady Simerly and Worley Simerly; and sisters, Florence Smith, Grace Arnett and Ethel Jenkins.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Lanthorn, Johnson City, and Roma Cowan and husband Tom, Elizabethton; a grandson, Schuyler Cowan, Elizabethton; her granddaughters, Gabi Cowan and husband Joe Saus, Annandale, Va., and Heather Jones and husband Shaw, Los Angeles, Calif.; a great-granddaughter, Emmy Lanthorn, Johnson City; a great-grandson, Win Jones, Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Bill Harmon and wife Ann, Ravenna, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Louise “Bobbie” Simerly, Knoxville; a brother-in-law, Clay Atwood, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews; and her special friends, Herbie and Leona Ritchie, Sarah Turnbull, Carl and Linda Roberson, Ben Johnson, Sharon Story, Nancy Smith, Tina Smith, Pauline McKinney, Janice Honeycutt, Holly Wiseman, Linda Wiseman, Larry and Linda Abel, Sue Farthing, Troy Wagner and all her caregivers.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harmon will be conducted at noon Friday, June 21, at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Johnson, the Rev. Mark Potter and Mr. Carl Roberson officiating. Music will be provided by Loren Harris and the church singers. Interment will follow in the Simerly Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be deacons of the church. Honorary pallbearers will be Merle and Geraldine Wagner, Leona and Herbie Rich, Mary Harrison, Bob and Coleen Bowling, Bendetta Widener and Bud and all of her church family. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Hermitage Health Care, Caris Hospice, Dr. David Fenner, Dr. Jeff Farrow, Dr. Charles Cole and Dr. Robert Walter. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence.
