Sidney Dossen Hughes, 75, of Roan Mountain, died Thursday, April 18, 2013 in his home following an extended illness.
He was born in Mitchell County, N.C., and a son of the late Clyde and Viola Putman Hughes.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Gouge and Emma Deetz.
Mr. Hughes was a self-employed carpenter and a member of Burbank Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Trustee.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Betty Eggers Hughes, of the home; son, Eddie Hughes and wife Lori, of Roan Mountain; four sisters, Shelby Brummitt, Fran Taylor, Joyce Thomas, all of Roan Mountain, and Lola Mae Guyn of Watauga; three brothers, Dallas Hughes of Lenoir, N.C., Al Hughes of Elizabethton and Russell Hughes of Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Hughes will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Burbank Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy English, the Rev. Richard Blevins and the Rev. Rex Johnson, officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. Music will be under the direction of Joyce Thomas, Mark Blevins, and the Youth of Burbank Freewill Baptist Church.
The graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Lewis Silvers, Tommy Jarrett and other friends and family. Justin Barnett will serve as Honorary Pallbearer. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the funeral home in Elizabethton at 12:45 p.m. Sunday.
