Albert J. Simerly

 

Albert John Simerly, 91, formerly of Hampton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 2, 2010, at the Pine Ridge Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late John and Ida Hyder Simerly. He was the oldest member and deacon of the Simerly Creek Believers Fellowship Church. Mr. Simerly was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation after 45 years of service. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, in July 1995; a son Norman Simerly, June 5, 2006; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Simerly, March 6, 2006; two granddaughters; and nine brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and L.J. Birchfield and Shelby and Bill Hughes, all of Hampton; six sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Jeanne Simerly, Elizabethton, D.C. and Barbara Simerly, Ed and Paty Simerly, Brooks and Sandy Simerly, Nick and Betsy Simerly and Harlon Simerly, all of Hampton; one brother: Omar Simerly, Johnson City; several nieces and nephews; 17 grandchildren; 20 great- grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Troy Davis, the Rev. Shane Waters and the Rev. Scott Greene officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Simerly Cemetery. Music will be provided by No Name But His. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Monday, will be Shane Simerly, Eddie Simerly, J.B. Simerly, Ronnie Breeden, Danny Simerly, Travis Simerly, Jeremy Simerly, Brian Chambers and Shannon Shepherd. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Honeycutt, Con Woodby, George Carr, Ed Chambers, Roy Coleman, Randy Gobble and Junior McKinney. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and L.J. Birchfield, Main Street, Hampton, or the residence of Gary and Jeanne Simerly, Watauga. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to all his CNAs  and the staff of Pine Ridge Care Center and Beulah, Nancy, Judy and Roberta. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion.  Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Monday. Kathleen E. Evans

 

Mrs. Kathleen Edens Evans, 90, 306 Elm St., Elizabethton, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Emmerrette Chambers Edens. She was a graduate of Milligan College and worked as a teacher at Harold McCormick Elementary. Mrs. Evans was a member of First Christian Church of Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Attorney General Lodge Evans, in 1983; two brothers, J. Frank Edens and Jim Edens.

 

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Jane and Jerry Treadway, Johnson City, and Deborah and Bill Griffin, Winston-Salem, N.C.; a son and his wife, Mark and Lori Evans, Lewisville, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Wes Treadway, William Griffin, Jennifer Hamrick, Kathleen Stewart, Patrick Epting, Michael Evans, Ethan Evans and Allison Evans Lowe; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Edens, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

Funeral service for Mrs. Kathleen Edens Evans were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, with Dr. Don Marshall and Mr. Brent Nidiffer, ministers, officiating. Music was under the direction of Kathleen Stewart, soloist, and Carolyn Estep, organist. Graveside service and interment followed the funeral service in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers were Barton Edens, Patrick Epting, Wes Treadway, Michael Evans, Ethan Evans, Travis Stewart and Will Griffin. Honorary pallbearer was Kent Edens. The family received friends at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday prior to the funeral service or at the residence, 306 Elm Street, Elizabethton, at other times. Kathy D. Benfield

 

Kathy Diane Benfield, 53, 1305-D Spruce Lane, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at her residence. She was a Carter County native. She was a homemaker. Kathy loved to work with crafts. She attended Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Billy Ray Pierce.

 

Survivors include two daughters, Heather Hopson and Natosha Benfield, both of Elizabethton; a son, Harley Benfield, Elizabethton; her mother, Joyce Vance, Elizabethton; a brother and special sister-in-law, Tim and Mary Pierce, Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Alyssa Julian, Jerimah Julian, Matthew Kropp, Emily Grindstaff, Christopher Hopson and Khloe Benfield; the father of her children, Greg Benfield; a special niece, MoMo Pierce, and two other nieces, Rozalyn Lilly and Jessica Pierce; and her dog, Scooter.

 

Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel, with Preacher Rosemary Matlock officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Kropp, Bobby Hall, Chris Fenner, Randy Julian, Brandon Arrowood and S.J. Myers. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Sandra L. Hampton

 

Miss Sandra Lea Hampton, 55, 1577 Old State Route 34, Telford, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at her residence. Miss Hampton was a native of Middlesex, England, and had lived most of her life in Washington County. She was the daughter of the late Buster and Kathleen Winters Hampton. In addition to her parents, two nephews, Daniel Hampton and Jr. Hampton also preceded her in death. She was a sales associate for Wal-Mart.

 

Survivors include one brother, David Hampton and his wife, Lisa, of Telford; one niece, Dawn Bates; and two great-nephews, Conner Bates and Adam Bates.

 

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Chaplain David Snyder will officiate. Dennis Brooks

 

Dennis “Wade” Brooks, 76, of Telford, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Durham-Hensley Nursing Home. A native of Washington County, he was a son of the late Phillip and Bell Poore Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a member of Enon Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of Wade Brooks Woodworking. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters.

 

Survivors include his wife, who was by his side until the end, Madelene Ball Brooks, Telford; daughter, Sharon Hoxie, Jonesborough; sons, Kenneth W. Brooks, Atlanta, Ga., and Dennis D. Brooks, Telford; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ruth and Lyle Foreman, Greeneville, Marjorie and Dave Kipps of Virginia, and Bobbie and Charles Partee of Idaho; grandchildren, Christie Childress, Travis Hoxie, and a very special granddaughter and best medicine for Wade, Cassandra Brooks; precious great-grandchildren, Christianna Childress, Hunter Childress, Gavin Childress and Abigail Hoxie; a very special person who Wade thought of as a daughter, Christi Brooks; a special aunt, Velma Harris, Telford; and special friends, Kenneth Blevins and Charlie and Marjorie Mitchell.

 

Funeral services for Mr. Brooks will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 6, in the Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Jerry Ketron and Rev. Albert Bentley officiating. Guerney T. Pierce

 

Guerney Thomas Pierce, 72, 233 Berry Hill Road, Elizabethton, went up to live in Heaven on Thursday morning, February 4, 2010, at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Armstrong B. and Donna Grace Smith Pierce. Mr. Pierce was a 1956 graduate of Unaka High School and a retired Lab Technician at North American Rayon Corporation after 33 years of service. He served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962. Mr. Pierce was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church and served as caretaker at the Caldwell Springs Cemetery for several years. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and farming. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Georgia Grindstaff, and a brother, James O. Pierce.

 

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Myrtle Buckles Pierce; a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Randy Wilson, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Paula Pierce, Afton, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Emma Grace Wilson and J.T. Pierce; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and John Williams, Elizabethton, and Patsy and Ronnie Stout, Gray; four brothers and four sisters-in-law, Ron Pierce, Hampton, Lawrence and Pauletta Pierce, Dean and Loretta Pierce, Dallas and Carolyn Pierce and Wanda Pierce, all of Elizabethton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a special brother to the Frank and Emma Buckles Family.

 

Funeral services for Mr. Pierce will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, February 6, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Willie Lunsford, Dr. William Duncan and the Rev. Jim Hawk officiating. Music will be provided by the Rev. Bill Taylor. Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 7, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Steve Hilman and the Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating. Ruth E. Adcox

 

Ruth Ellen Fulton Adcox, 89, 412 Watauga Road, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010, at her residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Fannie Cornett Fulton. Mrs. Adcox was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Adcox; a son, Robert O’Quinn; a daughter, Frances Adcox; two brothers and five sisters.

 

Survivors include her children, Thelma DePew, Kodak, Tenn., Jean Mulville, Colorado Springs, Colo., Donald O’Quinn, Ruffin College, N.C., Samuel Pritchard, Norman, Ark., Ricky Pritchard, Unicoi, Tenn., Carolyn Barlow, Morganton, N.C., Kathy Echo, Blacksburg, S.C., Vicky Nettles, Branchville, S.C., Charles Adcox, Moravian Falls, N.C., Donna Adcox, Elizabethton, Tenn., and Rocky Adcox of Virginia; 30 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Hardin, Notton, N.C.; and a brother, Kenneth Fulton, Drexel, N.C.

Greg Hughes

 

Greg Hughes, 57, 141 Grandview Road, Johnson City, died unexpectedly Sunday, January 31, 2010, at his residence. He was the son of the late Love Lee Hughes and Ileen Vista Vance Hughes. Mr. Hughes worked as a welder and then went to work with CSX Railroad in the transportation department. He loved fast motorcycles and fast cars. Mr. Hughes was a member of Hopwood Christian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joy Lou Phelps.

 

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Tammy Miller Bryson and Blaze Bryson, Nashville; two grandchildren, Corey Wayne Miller and Dakota Blaze Bryson, both of Nashville; a brother and his wife, Mike Hughes and Jenny Hughes, Gray; two nephews, Rick Slaughter and Kirk Slaughter, both of California; a niece and her husband, Johanna Gilespie and Joseph Gilespie, Gray; a great-niece, Eliza Gilespie, and a great-nephew, Trey Gilespie, both of Gray.

Kathryn A. Sammons

 

Kathryn Anne Sammons, 56, 501 Lee Avenue, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Michael J. and Essie Sargent McGovern. Mrs. Sammons was retired from the Kingsport Post Office. She was a member of Brick Christian Church. Kathryn served over six years in the United States Army. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Michael J. McGovern.

 

Survivors include her husband, Robert Toney Sammons; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen Marie and Jack A. Williams, Johnson City; two nephews, Jack A. Williams and Bruce Eric Williams; a great-niece, Jessica and Stephen Senney; a great-nephew, Andrew Williams; two great-nieces, Solan Williams and Ryan Williams; two special aunts, Evelyn Sargent and Gertrude Vaughn; nieces, Jennifer Morelock and Kitty Alexander; three sisters-in-law, Debbie Garner and husband Rudy, Lee McQueen and husband Wade and Vanessa Sammons; and her pets, Fritz, Tiger, Billy and Little Peppie.

 

A memorial service for Mrs. Sammons will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Don Marshall and Mr. Don Merriman, ministers, officiating. Rev. Herman D. Miller

 

Rev. Herman Dallas Miller, 60, Elizabethton, beloved husband, father and friend, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, February 1, 2010. Rev. Miller was a former fireman with the Elizabethton Fire Department and the founder of the Stoney Creek Church of God. Rev. Miller served in the United States Marine Corps.

 

Survivors include his wife, Ina Patricia Campbell Miller; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shanda Sharae and Andrew Whitehead and Shanasha Shanaine and Larry Bowman, all of Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Kaila Zevon Whitehead; his mother, Nellie Irene Davenport, Elizabethton; two sisters, Shirley Sheffield and Phyllis Edwards and her husband Johnny Edwards, all of Elizabethton; two brothers, Lonnie Miller, Elizabethton, and Paul Miller and wife Colleen, Morganton, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and also his in-laws, Maynard and Kathy Campbell, Clarence and Ginger Willis, Roy and Pat Campbell and Les Campbell and Connie.

 

Funeral services for Rev. Miller will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tony Gilliam officiating. Music will be provided by Debra Woods, pianist, and Doyce Sheffield, nephew, soloist. Graveside services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 5, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Friday, will be Jeremy Perry, Keith Morrell, Dejuane Sheffield, Doyce Sheffield, Tim Campbell, Randy Campbell, Deon Sheffield, Clarence Willis, Shawn Campbell and Johnny Edwards.
