Odell Thomas Whitehead, 82, of Bremerton, Wash., passed away Monday, July 11, 2011, at his residence. A native of Roan Mountain, Tenn., he was the son of the late Hobert and Wilda Ingram Whitehead.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Connelly and Paul Whitehead and a granddaughter, Rebecca “Bug” Whitehead.
He proudly served his county in both the Army and Navy and was a former employee of the Dodge division of Chrysler as well as the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Mich. From 1959 until his retirement in 1984 he was employed as a welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton. He enjoyed hunting, fishing sports, traveling and most of all, his family.
Survivors include his spouse, Lula L. Means Whitehead; three sons, R.L. McKinney (Juanita) of Elizabethton, Tenn.; Tom Whitehead (Dawn) of Bend, Oregon; and and Phillip (Cathy) Whitehead of Bremerton, Wash.; one daughter, Rebecca Tuttle (Jeff Frickle) of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, Brittney, Travis, Kyle and Nichole; three great grandchildren, “CJ,” Regan and Elliott; one sister, Charlotte Campbell of Elizabethton; and one brother, Richard Whitehead of Roan Mountain. Also surviving are serveral nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service for Odell will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at Beck Mountain Baptist Church, 2797 Siam Road, Elizabethton. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the “Mustard Seed Scholarship” at Wit’s End Corner for Learning, P.O. Box 475, Johnson City, Tenn. 37601.
