One dead in Roan Mountain fire

Authorities with the Carter County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that one person was killed Friday morning due to a fire in Roan Mountain.

Local emergency personnel were called to 133 Roan Street in Roan Mountain on the report of a fire at 10:30 a.m. CCSD Lt. Mike Little said there was one person in the home who was unable to escape.

Officials identified the victim as Jackie Hampton, 58.

Officials at Carter County Schools closed nearby Cloudland High School and Cloudland Elementary School at 12:30 p.m. due to the fire.
