Music teacher Elizabeth Pettit has been working with the elementary students for the past three months during their music classes to prepare for the production, titled “A Night with Dr. Seuss and Seussical Jr.”

Students in kindergarten and first grade will be performing songs corresponding with the Dr. Seuss books “One Fish, Two Fish” and “Dr. Seuss’s ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book.” Pettit said the song selection correlated with the characters and the themes in those books.

“I found some songs that went along with the characters or what the book was about,” Pettit said. “There were others that I changed the words around a little to make them go with the books.”

Students in second and third grade will perform songs from “Seussical Jr.,” a musical from Music Theater International. Pettit said “Seussical Jr.” is tied to the Broadway musical “Seussical.” The songs in “Seussical Jr.” are about the books “Green Eggs and Ham,” “McElligott’s Pool,” “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think” and “Horton Hears a Who.”

“The kids have all done a really good job,” Pettit said. “They can’t wait to sing and perform. They are excited about it. They all want to watch the other classes practice so they can sing along with them. They love the music and the dances they do.”

The musical will also feature speaking parts for the students. Two East Side Elementary teachers will narrate musical: Rachel Ayers will narrate Monday night and John Fehskens will narrate Tuesday night.

Pettit noted parent volunteer Renee Horton made the backdrop and the props for the musical.

The musical is free and open to the public. Kindergarten and second grade students will perform on Monday, Nov. 19, and first and third grade students will perform on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The musical begins at 7 p.m. each day and will be held at East Side Elementary.
