Palestinians warn of UN move over settlements

JERUSALEM (AP) — A spokeswoman says Palestinians are increasingly frustrated over Israeli settlement expansion and might seek redress at U.N. bodies even before Israeli-Palestinian talks have run their course.

Negotiations on the terms of a Palestinian state resumed in late July and the U.S. envisions a deal within nine months. Since the start of talks, Israel promoted plans for more than 3,000 new settlement apartments in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, war-won lands the Palestinians want for a state.

Palestinian spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi said Wednesday that Israel is “deliberately destroying the chances of success for these talks” by accelerating settlement activities.

The U.S. asked the Palestinians not to turn to U.N. bodies during the negotiations. Ashrawi warned that the Palestinians could pursue this course, even during talks, if settlement building continues.
