Emergency personnel tend to Randall Birchfield, 1906 W. G. St., Elizabethton, after he was injured. Witnesses said Birchfield’s truck struck a utility pole – seen in the background – before being stopped by a retaining wall.

Witnesses told police an Elizabethton man slumped over in his truck before crashing into a telephone pole and coming to an abrupt stop at the retaining wall of a nearby home’s driveway.

On Tuesday evening, the Elizabethton Police Department, Elizabethton Fire Department, and Carter County Emergency and Rescue Squad responded to a wreck near the intersection of West G Street and Hudson Drive that sent Randall Birchfield, 64, 1906 W. G St., Elizabethton, to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment.

Officer Joe Holsclaw, the first officer on the scene, said witnesses told him Birchfield appeared to lose consciousness before his Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck came to a crashing halt.

“He was traveling westbound on West G Street, and swerved over into the turn lane,” Holsclaw said. “(Witnesses) said it looked like he just fell asleep and slumped over. When he did, he crossed the eastbound lane, struck a light pole, cut it in two, and hit the embankment.”
