As the ambulance carrying a 20-year-old Johnson City woman began its ill-fated race with time Wednesday afternoon, just yards away a man sat stunned on the ground, head held in his hands as rescue personnel and others gathered.
“He’s really tore up,” Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Jonathan Street said of Teddy Greene, driver of the truck that police said struck and killed 20-year-old Whitney Richards.
Street said Greene, 48, of Elizabethton, was so distraught that neither he nor his investigators were able to retrieve a detailed statement from him.
“We haven’t got anything out of him,” Street said. “We’ll go back and re-interview him at a later time.”
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said Richards was killed after being struck from behind by Greene’s pickup truck. She and 12-year-old Ellie Price, of Elizabethton, were walking in a southerly direction down Route 91 and had nearly reached Laurel Branch Road before police said both were hit by the truck.
