With the Carter County School Board set to auction off Range Elementary School in about two weeks, the Carter County Election Commission needs to secure a new location for 3rd District voters.

“We are no longer going to be able to use that as a precinct,” said Administrator of Elections Tracy Harris.

The election commission took time to consider a few of its options at its Monday morning meeting and the first consideration was to send the 564 Range precinct voters to Watauga City Hall.

“That would put them up to about 1,000 voters,” Buckles said.

If Watauga City Hall is selected as the new Range community voting location, Harris said the exact total of voters would increase to 925.

“Watauga has 361 voters,” Harris said. “Keenburg has 1,268 and Central has 1,901, so it is still going to be smaller than the other two 3rd District precincts.”
Sending Range voters to Keenburg was also considered an option, but Harris said it is not plausible.

“We are not going to be able to do that because we are at our limit in Keenburg right now,” Harris said. “You have to meet a certain ratio according to the census. Our only real option is to use Watauga City Hall.”

However, Harris also informed the Election Commission that Fairview Baptist Church, which is in the Range precinct, was also an option and permission to use the church fellowship hall has been granted.

Most election commissioners were in agreement that sending Range School voters to Watauga would be the easiest solution.
