Poker Run 2012 to benefit Kari’s Heart Foundation

Kari’s Heart Foundation and White Realty and Auction will host Poker Run 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

Registration will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. at Whitehead Realty and Auction, 1970-C W. Elk Ave., Elizabethton. Cost is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger.

Lunch will be provided by Chick-fil-A of Elizabethton. Live music will be provided by the Johnson City Hitmen. Drawings will be held for various prizes.

All proceeds will benefit Kari’s Heart Foundation, a charity supporting hospitalized children and their families. According to the foundation’s website, Kari’s Heart Foundation was inspired by Kari Schoondyke, the daughter of Jeff and Jennifer Schoondyke. Kari was born Aug. 13, 2008, with life-threatening congenital heart disease and subsequently underwent open heart surgery at 9 days of age. She returned to the hospital March 19, 2009, to have her second open-heart procedure, from which she did not recover. Kari died April 7, 2009, at the age of just 7 months.

As a consequence of the loss of their daughter, her family looked for a way to pass on the love and support they received during their struggle to others who may be experiencing a similar healthcare crisis. While in the hospital with Kari, her parents soon realized that many other families did not have the financial, social or informational resources they required while their child was hospitalized for sometimes an extended period of time.

They created Kari’s Heart Foundation to lend support to these families with the goal of making an unimaginable situation just a little better.
