After spending more than two weeks investigating the deaths of an Elizabethton couple, police have issued a report indicating that the incident was a murder-suicide.
On the afternoon of Oct. 27, officers with the Elizabethton Police Department responded to a call of a possible death. Upon their arrival at the house at 1508 Garden Road, those officers found the bodies of Michael and Melissa Griffin, 49 and 43, respectively, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
After conducting its investigation, the EPD announced Wednesday afternoon that the evidence indicates that Michael Griffin shot his wife several times until she was dead before turning the gun on himself.
Police estimate that the murder-suicide took place in the early morning hours of Oct. 27. One neighbor reported hearing what might have been gunshots around 3 or 3:30 a.m.
The bodies were discovered later that afternoon by a family friend, who then made the call to 911.
