Program offers LifeLine to those recovering from addiction

By

LifeLine of Tennessee has partnered with Johnson City’s Insight Alliance to help East Tennessee addicts who want to reclaim their lives.

The recently launched program, funded by a state grant, aims to break one of the biggest remaining stigmas, one which could be the cause of recurring substance abuse for individuals fighting a battle against addiction. Jason Abernathy, LifeLine project coordinator, says there needs to be more compassion for those struggling to overcome addictions.

“A lot of folks don’t realize that because of this stigma attached to addiction and mental health, people won’t say anything,” Abernathy said. “They are afraid people will shun them. On top of helping those who are addicts, we hope to educate folks who are not addicts about the disease.”

Last summer, LifeLine began working with health councils in eight East Tennessee counties, including Carter and Johnson.

Abernathy said that, essentially, LifeLine should serve as a resource directory for those struggling to overcome addictions and are trapped inside of the “revolving door.”
