The Unaka Rangers took care of business on Senior Night at Snavely Gym, and that business was clinching a tie for first place in the Watauga Valley Conference with a win over University High.
A packed house on Friday night witnessed the Rangers 57-43 victory, which was earned early after a 7-0 run by the Junior Buccaneers to open the contest. The Rangers responded with a 14-point run, and by the end of the first period Unaka held a 22-12 advantage.
Senior wing Danny Bales kickstarted the Rangers (21-9 overall, 6-2 WVC) rally with a pair of buckets followed by a long-range shot from junior guard Logan Carrier that knotted the score at 7-7.

The Lady Rangers snapped a two-game conference losing skid and finished their conference slate on a high note with senior guard Alicia Colbaugh and junior post Brandi Ensor each posting a 12-point night.
Colbaugh opened with three treys in the opening period as Unaka held a 16-9 advantage after one period, and with Jessie Matheson and Hannah Tipton each knocking down second-quarter treys, Unaka went into the break with a 26-15 lead.
“I thought we shot the ball well, and Alicia was feeling it early,” said Lady Rangers head coach Wes Wright. “It was good for her to come out and explode early. It was good for these seniors to get this win tonight with all five of them on the floor together.
“I know we will be seeing this group again next week in the district tournament so we have to be ready for that.”
