Juanita McKinney shows members of the Carter County Highway Committee photos of debris washed into drainage ditches by recent rainfall. In the past few months, McKinney has brought the same concerns before the Highway Committee.

Juanita McKinney is staying on top of a water drainage issue she says is plaguing the area where she and her neighbors live.

She wants to make sure county officials are on top of it, too.

At the Carter County Highway Committee meeting on Monday, McKinney, who lives at 304 Reynolds Road, said a drainage ditch is not adequately catching water runoff from higher elevations.

“It’s not working,” she said. “It’s not carrying the water. It looks really bad and there’s a lot of traffic on that road.”

Commissioners Charles Von Cannon and Robert Gobble took time previously to look into the issue, she said.
While they were on site, McKinney said the ditch was cleared of debris.

“I can be patient and wait, but I haven’t heard anything back,” McKinney said. “The last meeting I came to it was handed off to somebody and no one has contacted me.”

On Monday, McKinney presented photos to the committee of how much debris has recently clogged the ditch again.

“I just want someone to help me with the issue,” McKinney said. “I know the road department has been covered up with ice and snow. I understand that the county has had its hands full with roads, but this is a really bad area.”
