Championships are more than just getting a first-place trophy. The gold will tarnish over the years, but the team’s effort will long be remembered.
I told that to the 2005 baseball team I coached that won the state championship and earned a trip to the Southeast Regional. Those words couldn’t be more fitting than for tonight’s rival contest at Chuckey-Doak Middle School.
Hampton and Cloudland will battle it out for the Region 1-A championship with a home substate game on the line. And their efforts will be closely monitored by everyone.
This is the rubber match between the two, with each taking games at home. Hampton won 59-50 inside of VanHuss-White Gymnasium while Cloudland prevailed 84-80 at Sonny Smith.
The two schools, only 10 miles apart, must now travel over 100 miles roundtrip to decide the outcome of the most important one. And a packed house will be on hand to watch.
Hampton’s dramatic 66-64 win over Unaka earned it a substate game on Monday. The Highlanders topped University High 64-53 to secure their spot.
