Rufus Freddie Wood Jr., 68, of Roan Mountain, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Wood was born in Roan Mountain to the late Rufus Fred Wood Sr. and Annie Birchfield Wood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Francis Wood Houston, and one step-child, Lou Ann Teaster.
Mr. Wood worked as a truck driver for McCoury Nursery and was of the Christian Faith.
Survivors include three children, Jamie Wood of Heaton, N.C., Shane Wood of Roan Mountain and Mary Ann Hamby and husband Joe of Roan Mountain; two step-children, Felix Hutchinson of Hampton and Roy Teaster of Roan Mountain; a sister, Kathaleen Wood Williams of Roan Mountain; three grandchildren, Journey Wood, Harley Hamby and Noah Hamby; eight step-grandchildren; and five great-step-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Wood was conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, February 10, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Pastor Jude Hughes officiating. Music was under the direction of the family. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m., prior to the funeral service on Monday. Friends may also call at the residence of his sister, Kathaleen Wood Williams, 804 Hampton Creek Road, Roan Mountain, at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, in the Wood Cemetery on Hampton Creek. Active pallbearers will be Frank Presnell, Larry Triplet, Gary Triplet, Richard Winters, Willie Shell, Meril Townsend, Robert Fields, Lynn Ellis and Kenny Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Freddie Fields and Darrell Johnson. Everyone will meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
