After hearing concerns from the county’s Safety Committee, the Carter County Board of Education discussed several security options for its schools during a workshop Monday afternoon.
Carter County Schools Facilities Supervisor Phillip Nave said the committee — which is comprised of some school board members, as well as county officials — had several recommendations to improve school security.
“The first suggestion was upgrading our video surveillance system,” Nave said. “I have a few options on that one, just to give you the benefit of deciding which one to do as far as money goes.”
Nave presented four options regarding video surveillance upgrades. Ultimately, the board recommended that Nave proceed with buying and installing additional cameras at Hampton, Happy Valley and Cloudland high schools, while also replacing every digital video recorder in the school system.
According to Nave, new digital video recorders, which primarily serve as the hubs for surveillance systems, would also allow security officers to view several cameras on a smart device.
“As long as they’re on a school’s campus,” Nave said. “It’s not something that I could walk up and find. It’s something you have to be set up on.”
The board also approved the installation of electronic door locks at all of the high schools, as well as battery backups for all of the schools’ public address systems.
Nave estimated the total cost of these security upgrades to be at around $166,000.
