Kelly Andrae Smith, 30, submitted a formal letter of resignation to Carter County Director of Schools Kevin Ward on April 16, effective immediately.

Ward said a certified substitute was hired to take over his class, and it was “business as usual” at the school Monday.

The director said safety concerns voiced by some parents were unfounded, and said attendance at the school was close to average and better than last week.

“The kids are safe and secure,” he said. “We’ve got an SRO officer at the school, and we’re trying to keep things as normal as possible for the students.”

Ward said when he submitted his notice, Smith, who was on unpaid suspension since he was charged with for second-offense DUI in February, handed over his keys to the school building.
