Search for unseasonable hummingbirds lead to region

By

Jane Kading and Mark Armstrong traveled from Knoxville recently to band rufous hummingbirds in Carter and Johnson counties.

Knoxville Zoo Curator of Birds Mark Armstrong has had a busy introduction to the winter season tracking down hummingbirds in Carter and Johnson counties.
People learning of his quest for hummingbirds on freezing days in Northeast Tennessee might be excused for scratching their heads in puzzlement.
Armstrong is hunting rufous hummingbirds, however, a species that has increasingly shown up in Northeast Tennessee during the winter months for the past several decades.
His annual winter hummingbird season has gotten off to a great start in 2012.
