Sharion Carroll “Shirl” Dyer, 66, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at his residence. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was a son of the late Frank and Hazel Barnett Dyer. He had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. He was a retired employee of the Carter County Highway Department. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years Wilma Pope Dyer; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Jordan Dyer, Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Mariah and Neyland Dyer; two sisters, Charlotte Dyer, Elizabethton and Pam Love and husband, Jerry, Gray; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Stuart and Norma Jean Dyer, Elizabethton; Steve and Vicky Dyer and Michael and Janet Dyer, all of Roan Mountain and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 in the Dyer Cemetery, (Cove Creek), Roan Mountain with the Rev. Don Julian officiating. Burial will follow the service. Active pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 11:50 a.m. Monday will be Eugene Gouge, Ricky Putman, Terry Dyer, Tommy Cress, Bill Pope and Tim Dyer. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Dr. David Fenner, the staff of Mountain States Hospice and special nurse, Greg and Gene Hinson.
