Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes said the woman who crashed her sedan in October, taking the lives of her two children and later her own, was chasing the children’s father after a confrontation outside an Elizabethton drug store.
Mathes said Katrina Nye and Robert Moffitt, parents of 2-year-old Dalton Moffitt and 7-year-old Jonathan Nye, were seen by witnesses in a heated argument outside the CVS drug store on U.S. Highway 19E, where Mathes said Moffitt, Johnny Hensley and Keri Baird purchased pseudoephedrine intending to make methamphetamine.
“What we know is they went into the CVS to buy pseudoephedrine, the mother pulls up with the kids, they have an altercation because he’s meeting another woman and then they take off up the road,” the sheriff said. “She was upset that he was meeting with another girl, she was enraged, and that’s why the crash took place.”
He said Nye lost control of the Ford Taurus and crossed over the median in Valley Forge, striking a minivan traveling in the other direction.
