Join a “Ride 4 Recovery” Saturday, Oct. 27, beginning at 10 a.m. at Smith Brothers Harley Davidson Johnson City. Ride captain will be Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes.
The ride route will begin at Smith Brother’s Harley Davidson and will include a stop on the track at Bristol Motor Speedway with scenic beauty spots in Bluff City and Watauga Lake. The ride will begin at 10 a.m. and will conclude at 4 p.m. at Smith Brother’s Harley Davidson. There will be music, food and more from 2 to 4 p.m. This is a fundraiser to support Red Legacy Recovery’s programs for women who are serving time at the Carter County jail in Elizabethton.
Red Legacy Recovery’s mission is to empower women in East Tennessee with the skills they need to begin a new life in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The organization strives to equip each woman with the tools to be self-sufficient, employed amd self-confident. There programs include core “life-skills” training for women in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The main focuses are teaching how to manage a household and be self-sufficient, money management, self-confidence and self-esteem classes, job interview skills, dressing for success, vision-casting/goal-setting seminars and how to manage day-to-day stress.
“Substance abuse and addiction is no longer something that can be ignored,” Mathes said. “It is found in all communities, among all races and within all socio-economic backgrounds. Its presence in Appalachia and more specifically East Tennessee, is devastating to our region as our inmate population continues to rise. I greatly believe that over 80 percent of Carter County inmates are directly or indirectly incarcerated because of a substance abuse related issue.”
Mathes said the Carter County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to begin a partnership with Red Legacy Recovery.
“This is a first step in combating addiction and Red Legacy programs are teaching women comprehensive life skills and equipping them with the tools they need to re-enter society as sober individuals,” he said. “Red Legacy Recovery brings added hope for our community.”
At the conclusion of the ride, Red Legacy will have music, food and more including a kickoff for a new women’s networking group in the Tri-Cities/Appalachia region that has been named “Legacy Women – Appalachia.”
Array of talent and artistry from local female musicians and artists will be featured. Dana Seals Gillian will be performing live with Chelsea Lewis and Marie Bowman. Some open spots remain on the schedule for other female musicians who want to support other women who are on their way up.
Red Lgegacy is currently taking registration fees for the year and our goal is 100 professional women by the end of the year. Those joining now will get a discount on your joining fee when they sponsor another professional woman at the same time.
The organization is looking for women of influence and women that are serious about networking and also community service. Meetings will be held once a month and will be a typical networking group meeting with the addition of keynote speakers, opportunities to host the meeting, as well as the celebration of personal and professional accomplishments of each woman. Red Legacy is excited to not only make this the “elite group” in Appalachia, but also change lives of others at the same time.
Organizers said that the event is a unique opportunity because all of the joining fees will go to support Red Legacy’s non-profit work. For every professional woman that joins, another woman that is currently starting her new life in recovery will be afforded the opportunity to also join for free. Selections for these scholarships will be based on those who have completed a Red Legacy life-skills workshop.
