The Historic Jonesborough Dance Society will hold a contra dance Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center, 117 Boone St.
Non-perishable foodstuffs will be collected at this dance on behalf of the Jonesborough Area Ministerial Association Food Bank.
Admission to the dance is $7, $5 for dance society members and $5 for full-time students. A family package allows parents to bring all of their own children for a total of $15.
All dances are smoke- and alcohol-free. No partner is necessary. Families and children are welcome.
A half-hour contra dance workshop will be offered at 7 p.m.
At the 9 p.m. waltz break, Klondike ice cream bars, the official frozen treat of the HJDS, will be offered to all dancers courtesy of the HJDS.
The evening will begin with a family dance from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.
At the family dance, parents or grandparents and children ages age 4 and up learn traditional dances. The dance will consist of easy steps for participants of all ages, taught by Connie Carringer of Durham, N.C. The goal is to teach the fundamentals of dancing with a focus on having fun and placing less of an emphasis on techniques.
Types of dances include circles, long-ways sets, squares, and odd number sets. All dances will be taught and called with high-energy live music from students in the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music program.
Admission to the family dance is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Family package costs $15 for parents and all their children. If the participants wish to stay for the regular dance, their Family Dance admission can be applied to the regular admission costs.
Performing for this event will be the band Hands Four from Boone, N.C. The caller is Connie Carringer from Durham, N.C. The dance will run from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Hands Four is made up of M. Mueller on fiddle, Georgie Donovan on keyboard, Vergil Weatherford on mandolin and Jessie Moon on guitar. Carringer, who attended Appalachian State University, has worked with this band on many occasions.
