Students cross Watauga in Overmountain lesson

Screams and shouts filled the air at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park Friday afternoon as eighth-grade students from T.A. Dugger Junior High School were greeted by the icy cold water of the Watauga River during their hike along the trail of the Overmountain Men.

A procession of 161 students, TAD teachers and administrators and Sycamore Shoals Park Interpretive Ranger Jason Davis completed the eight-mile walk from Rocky Mount Historic Park to Sycamore Shoals. The walk is a yearly tradition for the TAD eighth-grade students, and follows the path the Overmountain Men took on their way to Sycamore Shoals on their way to Kings Mountain.

TAD history teacher Chris Berry was in charge of this year’s excursion.
