Third quarter pivotal in Lady Highlanders’ win over HHS

By Logan Lawson

In just over a minute of play, Courtney Wilson and the Lady Highlanders erased 10 minutes of Hampton’s hard work. In the end, it was the difference in the game.

Wilson scored a game-high 16 points, including seven straight in a key third-quarter stretch, as Cloudland held on to take a 46-36 victory over Hampton on Friday night at VanHuss-White Gym.

With the win, Cloudland clinches the third seed in the District 1-A tournament and Hampton will enter the tournament with the fourth seed.

““It is nice to clinch the 3-seed, but it is already a rivalry game for Hampton whether it is for first or third,” Cloudland coach Matt Birchfield said. “It is always a competitive game and they are a big rival for us. I am real happy with the kids. They came out of the gate playing well, which is something we have really talked about. I felt like we played well first quarter.”
