Elizabethton Fire Department Capt. Steve Murray said the mercy mission was set after he received a plea from a Facebook post targeting emergency responders, seeking help for firefighters, police and 9/11 survivors from Breezy Point, N.Y., who lost their homes to the furious storm.

“Being a firefighter is a brotherhood,” Murray said Thursday afternoon as the rest of the crew planning to undertake the four-day aid mission stood around him in the Station 2 lounge. “It’s an understood but unspoken part of the contract, to help our brothers.”
