On Sunday, seven local firefighters will set out to provide a brief relief for exhausted emergency workers in an area still reeling from the devastation left behind by Hurricane Sandy.
Elizabethton Fire Department Capt. Steve Murray said the mercy mission was set after he received a plea from a Facebook post targeting emergency responders, seeking help for firefighters, police and 9/11 survivors from Breezy Point, N.Y., who lost their homes to the furious storm.
“Being a firefighter is a brotherhood,” Murray said Thursday afternoon as the rest of the crew planning to undertake the four-day aid mission stood around him in the Station 2 lounge. “It’s an understood but unspoken part of the contract, to help our brothers.”
