Strapping Martires Arias owned the Elizabethton Twins on Monday night.
The 6-foot-7 flamethrower hurled a four-hit shutout over seven innings, striking out seven and spurring the Kingsport Mets to a 4-0 Appalachian League victory at Joe O’Brien Field. Arias walked only two, and on the evening the Twins fanned 11 times.
“We had double-digit punch-outs again,” Elizabethton manager Ray Smith said. “That big boy has had some control issues last year and this year as well, but tonight he didn’t have any issues. He was painting us.
“His shadows were working for him. He’s tall, he had an angle and he was wearing out the outside part of the plate with his fastballs and breaking balls.”
