John Holly and George W. Bays each rode off to war a century and a half ago; on Tuesday a local group made certain their military service would be honored.
On Tuesday afternoon, members of the Watauga Historical Association erected two new headstones for Holly and Bays in the Historic Green Hill Cemetery to celebrate the two men’s service in the Civil War.
Holly was born on Jan. 7, 1848, in Carter County and served in the 13th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry for the Union Army.
Bays, on the other hand, served in the 34th Battalion Virginia Cavalry of the Confederacy. Though he was born in 1842 in
Russell County, Va., he and his family moved to Carter County in the 1880s.
While WHA President Dawn Peters said she felt rewarded to honor Bays and Holly, she added that they may not have been the only veterans to go unrecognized.
