Unaka edged by East; Boone routs HV

JONESBOROUGH — Unaka’s basketball team took four-time champion Sullivan East to the wire, only to falter in the closing seconds.

The Rangers were knocked off 59-57 on Monday night in opening-round action of the 24th annual Hardee’s Classic at David Crockett.

Alex Baltija had knotted the affair at 57-all, before Gavin Grubb drove to the hoop with four seconds remaining. The Rangers didn’t have time to get the ball up the court for a final desperation attempt.

The Warriors hung tough for most of the first quarter, before being overwhelmed by the Trailblazers.

“Four minutes of execution just doesn’t get it done,” Happy Valley coach Chuck Babb said. “We come out and looked great for four minutes. I think we caught them off-guard playing zone.
