Wanted man captured after shootout, chase

A Johnson County man suspected of shooting two people during an altercation Monday morning fired at police cruisers as he led officers on a high-speed chase up State Route 91 that ended only when he was rammed off the road, Sheriff Mike Reece said Thursday.

Richard MabeRichard Shane Mabe, 33, who has been on the run from deputies and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents since the shootings, and who was briefly placed on the TBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted List, was spotted at approximately 11:45 a.m. in a Saturn sedan in the drive-through of the Mountain City McDonald’s restaurant by a passerby and reported to police.

Reece said a Mountain City Police officer and a Johnson County Sheriff’s Department deputy were dispatched to the area and quickly radioed in to report a pursuit of the vehicle with shots fired.

The number of officers involved in the pursuit grew to include Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers and Damascus, Va., city police officers as Mabe and his passenger, later identified as 29-year-old Timothy Lee Greer, of Creston, N.C., sped north on State Route 91 toward the Virginia state line, Reece said.

“On 91 he stopped, came out of the sunroof and shot one of the city cars,” the sheriff said. “Then he and his passenger pointed guns at two of my officers who were waiting beside the road as they went by.”

About five miles outside of town, Reece said Mabe drove into a Marathon filling station and took a Nissan that was waiting at a gasoline pump.

“They both came out of their car with guns and carjacked a guy who was pumping gas,” the sheriff said.

But the pause in the chase allowed more officers to catch up to the fleeing vehicle, Reece said, and the Nissan was soon rammed off the road by officers.
