AFTON — Happy Valley’s season came to a close here Saturday night in the Region 1-AA quarterfinals. Throughout the season, some folks might not have given the Warriors a chance to make it the region tournament, so to still be playing while others’ seasons were through was a big deal.
“Half of the teams are sitting at home right now. We are happy to be in the half of the teams that were playing,” said coach Chuck Babb, whose Warriors lost 57-45 to District 2 champion Chuckey-Doak. “With our record (6-23), and to get this far, we felt like we had a chance to win this game. We certainly did have a chance. We made a good comeback. I am proud of our seniors. They are the ones who helped get us here. They are the ones that carried the load. We wish them well.”
The Warriors led at the end of the first quarter, but a troublesome second put them in a hole that was just too deep to escape. Happy Valley gave it a good shot, though, rallying from 17 down at the start of the fourth quarter to trail by only eight with a little more than two minutes to play.
A complete comeback wasn’t in the works, and Chuckey-Doak held on for the win.
