This week, citizens who donated their time to planning a celebration for the Veterans Monument in downtown Elizabethton received some welcome news.
When the planning group — informally referred to as the Monument Committee — met at the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday afternoon, Events and Marketing Coordinator Stephanie McKinney and County Historian Scott Bowers told them the city of Elizabethton had approved the event, which is scheduled for Oct. 12.
“The city had concerns about some of the businesses or the road being closed,” Bowers said, but still backed the event.
McKinney said she believes the event has a lot of support from the Downtown Business Association, adding, “Now we need to start getting people committed, and form the parade from there.”
Bowers added that, with permission from Elizabethton, the committee could begin enlisting the aid of some of the local chapters of veterans support groups.
“Now that we’ve got the city’s approval, we can go full speed with American Legion, (Veterans of Foreign Wars), and Rolling Thunder,” Bowers said.
Though the details of the ceremony are still being worked out, the committee had previously agreed on one special presentation.
