Woman’s club donations will benefit cancer patients at hospital

Woman’s Club members made 34 fleece hats, 20 pillows for under the arm and one stomach pillow for the hospital to distribute to patients who have undergone mastectomies, port installations or other surgeries, along with chemotherapy patients.

Club member Jo Voigt said the club learned of the statewide GFWC project while attending the district fall meeting. They returned to Elizabethton and began crafting the hats and pillows for individuals undergoing cancer treatments.

Voigt said the smaller pillows made to be placed under the arm helped to relieve pressure and give support to a sore chest or shoulder after surgery. The larger stomach pillow is used to support the abdomen after surgeries when patients have to cough or otherwise place pressure on that area.

She said the hats helped keep chemotherapy patients warm if they lose their hair during treatments and could give them a boost of confidence during a trying time. The hats and pillows are made of soft, washable materials so the patient can use them for as long as they are needed.
