Woman’s scary experience provides police with useful teachable moment

By

In the wake of a recent home invasion that involved a woman and her young son, Elizabethton police officers are praising her for keeping a cool head and avoiding danger. They are also using the incident to provide a lesson to the public as to what to do in similar circumstances.

The victim, Leslie Scruggs, had been sleeping, and her 4-year-old son was asleep upstairs, when police said the three men entered the apartment through an unlocked door.

Scruggs said she heard a noise and went to find out what it was when she found the men.

“The best thing to do, if you see there is someone inside your residence, it probably is not best to confront them,” said Elizabethton Police Department Maj. Greg Workman. “You don’t know if they are armed. You are putting yourself in danger.”
