Writer: TTC expansion due to Rep. Kent Williams

To the editor:

I am writing in support of State Rep. Kent Williams’s re-election bid to continue to represent the people of Elizabethton and Carter and Unicoi counties.

Kent has played a significiant role in economic development to benefit his constituency since he was first elected to the legislature in 2006. The latest example is the $16 million construction project now underway at the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton.

Through Kent’s effort, Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen set aside $16 million for the project that was announced on Sept. 29, 2010, at at news conference held on the front law of TTC-Elizabethton’s main campus, located at 426 State Highway 91 N. in Elizabethton. It is the largest single construction project in Carter County now underway.

The benefits of the construction of three new buildings and renovation of a fourth building at the technology center are far reaching. When completed in January of 2014, it will provide classrooms and shop areas to combine all training programs at one location. Today, in addition to the main campus, training programs are offered at 1500 Arney St. in Elizabethton, which is where I enrolled as a student in electricity-electronics in 1965. State Sen. Herman Robinson of Elizabethton was instrumental in locating the vocational technical training facility on Arney Street in 1963.

Kent has continued those early legislative efforts to provide training opportunities for entry level employment for residents of the area at a reasonable cost. Since 1965, as a student and then as an instructor of electricity and electronics, I have observed numerous families obtain good employment as a result of attending the vocational technical school, which is now called the Tennessee Technology Center at Elizabethton. In today’s world, it is what you can do and not just what you know.

State Rep. Kent Williams should be re-elected to the Tennessee Legislature in the November election.

-Terry Peters, Elizabethton
